Second largest gas field discovered in Sichuan

Chinanews, Chengdu, Mar1. 20 – According to the Ministry2 of Land and Resources, Puguang gas field, located in northeastern Sichuan Province, has a verified reserves of 356 billion cubic meters, ranking it China’s second largest gas field. It is the first time for China to discover a large gas field in Sea Facies Stratum3.

 

Currently 90% of oil and gas reserves are discovered in Sea Facies Stratum, covering an area of 450 million square meters in China. Chinese scientists mainly from Sinopec and University of Petroleum4 started to put efforts into prospecting5 for oil and gas in Sea Facies Stratum in the 1950s.

 

Ma Yongsheng, a manager from Sinopec Southern Branch said that some 20 gas wells have been drilled around the region, and almost every well is productive. He pointed6 out that such record is rare even by the world standard.
