紧要关头

诸 葛 亮 在 《 出 师 表 》  说 ： “ 今 天 下 三 分 ， 益 州 疲 敝 ， 此 诚 危 急 存 亡 之 秋 也 。 ” 这 段 话 可 以 这 样 译 做 英 文 ： Now that the country is split into three parts and our Yi district is impoverished¹, the moment of truth is staring us in the face。 为 甚 么 这  把 “ 危 急 存 亡 之 秋 ” 译 做 moment of truth呢 ？

按 moment of truth一 词 出 自 西 班 牙 斗 牛 场 ： 斗 牛 士 向 牛 刺 出 致 命 一 剑 的 一 刻 ， 叫 做 moment of truth。 这 是 生 死 、 成 败 攸 关 的 一 刻 ， 斗 牛 士 必 须 使 出 真 本 领 ， 半 点 含 糊 不 得 。 所 以 ， 人 们 渐 渐 用 了 这 个 词 来 比 喻 “ 紧 要 关 头 ” 或 “ 严 酷 考 验 才 能 、 人 格 等 的 时 刻 ” ， 例 如 ：

The moment of truth is quickly approaching for the students. Could they undergo torture without betraying their comrades? Nobody knows.（ 学 生 们 快 要 面 临 严 酷 考 验 了 。 他 们 能 够 抵 受 酷 刊 不 出 卖 同 志 么 ， 谁 都 不 知 道 。 ）
