The beautiful landscapes and comfortable natural environment both play an important part in Sichuan a land of longevity1. |
Chinanews, Chengdu, September 15 – Sichuan is the first province to enter the aging society in China, where currently there are 3,088 centenarians.
Sichuan unfolded its chapter of aging society as early as 1997, even before the achievement of an overall well-off society. The large population there also accelerated Sichuan's pace. Unlike many other countries in the world, rural areas in Sichuan first entered aging society. Sichuan provincial2 government has issued a series of regulations to guarantee the right of the senior citizens there. A perfect old-age care system has been set up with the joint3 effort of the government, society, families and senior citizens themselves to support the aging population. Besides that system, the government has done its best to create an atmosphere of respecting the aged4 in the province. All that mentioned above makes Sichuan a very good place for the aged to spend their remaining years in happiness. No wonder there are so many senior citizens over 100 years old, most of whom live in Chengdu, Leshan and Ziyang. Interestingly, about 80% of them are female, and more than 85% of them live in rural areas. Du Pinhua, currently 120 years old, honored with the title "person of longevity" by the Guinness, lives in Jianwei County in Sichuan. Still hale and hearty5, she will surely break the record.
