北京市政府周一宣布,计划立法实施垃圾分类。
Household garbage will need to be sorted into four categories: kitchen waste, recyclable waste,
hazardous2 waste, and other waste.
Fines for people who fail to follow the new rules will be higher than those faced by rule-breaking residents in Shanghai, where individuals who fail to sort their garbage can be fined up to 200 yuan (about 29 U.S. dollars).
Beijing residents produce 26,000 tonnes of garbage each day, which is 1.1 kilograms per person per day, said Sun Xinjun from the city's urban management commission. All of the city's 29 garbage disposal centers are running at full capacity.
The city introduced household waste management regulations back in 2012 but few people adhere to the rules because of poor
supervision3 and enforcement.
Shanghai's new rubbish sorting rules are the strictest in China. On Day 1, the city's law enforcement officers inspected around 1,600 communities, 400 enterprises, 1,800 shops, and 21 hotels, and issued more than 600 warnings.
